The Weekly Word with Dr. Dowe: Are You Committed?

Bible Text

..And the Lord said, “The famine has come because Saul and his family are guilty of murdering the Gibeonites… So King David asked, “What can I do...How can I make amends so that you will bless the Lord’s people again?

2 Samuel 21:1-3 (NLV)

Title: Are you committed to leftovers?

Saul took upon himself to break the vow that the Israelites made to the Gibeonites in his haste to expand Israel. We must realize that we can’t do wrong in order to execute justice. Even when our closest friends counsel us to do something that seems right, we must always put God’s commands first. Making a vow then is similar to signing a contract or compliance agreement today. To break a vow was a serious offense against God’s law. Numbers 30:2 says, “A man or woman who vows to the Lord or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he or she says to do”. This encourages us not to take our promises or agreements to God or to others lightly.

David knew the vow that Saul made earlier and sought to make it right with the Gibeonites. He gave the Gibeonites seven of Saul’s male off springs; they executed them all on a tree on a mountain and left their bodies there for the scavenger birds and wild animals. But there was someone else who new God’s word and obeyed it. Rizpah, the mother of two of the seven executed. Deut. 21:23 says, “an executed body on a tree must not hang overnight or it’s a curse in the sight of God and defiles the land from harvest”. Rizpah vowed to guard the men’s body day and night from the wild animals the entire harvest season (April to October) so that the land would be blessed and productive. Are you that committed to God?

You’ll soon look back and see that a miraculous transformation has occurred. Knowing God’s word is not enough, we must obey it and be committed to do it!
