The Appointed Time of the Heart

Title: The Appointed Time of the Heart 4/23/2017

“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. And saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel!”

Mark 1:14-15 (KJV)

The Gospel of Mark describes Jesus as the Servant of God. Jesus is very “busy” making disciples, he moved around a lot healing folk’s bodies and saving their souls. We find the word “immediate” more than 40 times in the book of Mark.

Jesus early days were spent in Galilee and He would come up to Jerusalem only for feasts times. Galilee was a fairly large region where both Jews and Gentiles lived but in separate villages. It held over 15,000 people. However, in the above scripture, Jesus came out and up to Jerusalem on this the Appointed Time to begin His preaching career. The Appointed Time (or “The time is fulfilled” is worth detailing): There were two ancient Greek words that translated time: 1) Chronos, or chronological time and 2) Kairos, or decisively strategic time. Jesus used Kairos time to preach the message “The strategic time for the kingdom of God is now. Today, we can be comforted to know that Jesus message is the same. He wants his church to come home today. Repent, change your direction, have a change in heart at the Appointed Time (e.g. quit old habits); must be chosen to experience the Kingdom of God!

The people then wanted a kingdom with a New King to replace oppression like people today want a new President. Jesus also brought the message of love not subjugation; one of grace not under the law; one of humility not pride; one for all races not just Jews. To enter the Kingdom is a process that involves the heart at the Appointed Time. Repent is a “heart” term. Folks had to change their direction, not go the same way. The word “repent” describes a process of what “coming to God is like”. We can’t come to the kingdom of God unless we leave our past sins and the self-life. Believe (Greek word pisteuo) is another term in this passage. This speaks of a relationship of trust and dependence. There are quite a few who believe on the Gospel, but they do not believe in it. This word means to rest in the relationship. So, Jesus preaching began with a call that is immediate and now today. Let the heart find ease in trusting in God and then be busy about telling others about how good personally He is to you.
