The Weekly Word with Dr. Dowe: Obedience and Order

“..Then David led them…to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies who is enthroned between the cherubim. They placed it on a new cart…But when they arrived at the threshing floor…the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand and steadied the Ark of God. Then the Lord’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him dead because of this...and Uzzah died right there beside the ark of God."

2 Samuel 6:1-7

The Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God was a treasure to the people of God during David’s time. The Ark had ordered directions as to who and how it was to be constructed (Exodus 36-37). God gifted a skilled craftsman (named Bezalel) with special ability to perform the task. Bezalel obediently made the Ark with acacia wood 45x27x27 inches long, wide, and high. It had 2 cherubim (angels) facing each other on the lid. It was all overlaid inside and out with pure gold and a molding of gold all around it. He in order cast 4 gold rings to its 4 feet and poles made of acacia wood, overlaid with gold which were inserted into the rings at the side of the Ark in order to carry it. The Ark was a symbol of God’s presence and power. Only the Levites could touch and carry the Ark. As you see in above scripture, David wanted to move the Ark to Jerusalem to ensure God’s blessing on God’s people. David and Uzzah had good intentions. But, David nor Uzzah got the memo or just forgot to consult God and read the Law in Numbers 4:15, which specifically told who and how this sacred treasure should be moved.

For some reason, David and Uzzah tried to take a short cut and move the Ark like the Philistines did when they stole it briefly during war but returned it quickly on a new cart. God did’nt like that either and started to kill the Philistines through plagues (1 Samuel 6). Unfortunately, Uzzah died. But, David started praising God while he and the Levites later correctly moved the Ark later.

How easy it is to design our own methods of acknowledging God rather than doing what he requires in His Word (the Bible). Obedience and Order are God’s ways in everything we do (period!).

“Bring all your tithes to the storehouse (in the Temple)…I will pour you out a blessing you won’t have room enough to take it in.”

Malachi 3:10

“God has given both his promise and oath; these two are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. When we flee to him in refuge we have a great confidence and hope."

Hebrews 6:18
