The Weekly Word with Dr. Dowe: How long and why?

“How long, O Lord, must I call for help? But you do not listen! Violence is everywhere! I cry, but you do not come to save me…yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! The Sovereign Lord is my strength.” - Habakkuk 1:2 – 3:19 (NLT)
TITLE: How long and why?
This book records the prophet Habakkuk’s dialogue asking God questions. Do you at times want to ask our Just God questions?: Why do lovely persons have to suffer and die from incurable cancers, or why do our kids get addicted on life-long drug use or/and poverty, or why do we try to live right but just can’t seem to get ahead, or why is there a cold spirit when it comes to seeking God’s will in all situations?
Habakkuk lived during a time when powerful nations were fighting for its military might, strategies, armies, weapons, riches and prisoners. He believed in God but had a problem with his limited understanding of God’s ways. Romans 11:33 says, “How impossible it is for us to understand God’s decisions and ways!”
When Habakkuk was troubled he went directly to God and Rejoiced! He did not pout like we do. When struggling from doubt to faith, don’t be afraid to ask questions of God. We must keep in mind that the essence of Christianity is asking the God who made us to help us give all we can in service to him. “God’s glory not self-glory.”
Habakkuk’s two questions were:
1) How long must I see misery, violence and destruction?
2) Why O Lord, My Rock have you sent, of all people, the evil Babylonians to correct and overtake us??
The answers God gave Habakkuk are the same answers he gives to us. “If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, watch...for it will surely take place….”
