The Weekly Word with Dr. Dowe: Humble Beginnings

“That night there were lowly shepherds staying in in the fields…Suddenly, an angel appeared among them … and the Lord’s glory surrounded them. The angel reassured them, I bring you good news…The Savior, The Messiah, The Lord is born today in Bethlehem…you will find him lying in a manger. The angels were joined by a vast host of others-praising God! ...peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased” Luke 2:8-14 (NLT)
It is interesting to me how my spirit and curiosity is drawn to the writings of Luke, a well-trained Gentile physician, who wrote both The Gospel of Luke and The book of Acts in the Holy Bible.
Luke’s descriptions are most comprehensive, his diction is superb, his diagnoses and illnesses are thoroughly detailed yet he succinctly points to and presents Jesus Christ as both Human and Savior. Let’s take a look at Luke 2:8-14 (NLT). Luke’s character of compassion is evident because of all the things he could have pulled out of history at that time, he writes about lowly shepherds, a socially poor town called Bethlehem and an insignificant object, a manger. Later in time, even Jesus preached that position, authority and money are not important in his Kingdom yet faithful obedience from the heart is. “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him,” for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs Matthew 5:3 (NLT). Jesus’s birth was announced to humble, low status persons. Jesus came into the world in humble surroundings.
The Good news about Jesus is that he came to all, rich, poor, wise, unwise, black, white, Jew or Muslim, he healed every kind of disease and illness. He comes to anyone who has a heart open to receive him. “Jesus came and lives forever to intercede with God on your behalf” Hebrew 7:25 (NLT).
