The Weekly Word with Dr. Dowe: What Do You Want?

Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the army of the Philistines; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few…then Jonathan said, If they say, ’Wait until we come to you, then we will stand still, But if they say, ‘Come up to us, then we will go up…This will be a sign that the Lord has delivered them into our hand…Suddenly, panic was in the camp, and the earth quaked, there was confusion everywhere…the Philistines were killing each other…So, the Lord saved his people (Israel) that day.1 Samuel 14:6-23 (KJV)

As people of God, we must stand up and be leaders and we must be obedient to God. As leaders, we have strengths and weaknesses; it is our weaknesses that make us usable by God. Second Corinthians 12:10 says, “For when we are weak then we are made strong for Christ’s sake. Take pleasures in infirmities.” In this story above we find Jonathan, the son of Israel’s 1st King, named Saul. Jonathan is going alone off to battle with another young fellow who is carrying his weapons; without his daddy’s army.

How many times as a leader have you felt all alone to make crucial decisions? Jonathan was weary, I’m sure, but he trusted God to give him and the armor-bearer the victory. He acted on the Principle of trust. Jonathan did not sit quietly by in the presence of the adversity of war. To sit calmly by, instead of being proactive serves only to deify common sense.

Jesus asks in Luke 18:41 “What do you want me to do for you?Do you have a need from Jesus today? Remember, God doesn’t act in common sense ways, but in supernatural ways. The agony we often suffer is usually the result of a deliberate shallowness of our own heart. If what we want in our heart is an impossibility, then it is the very thing we should ask for. We have to come to the point of believing in God; and believing in who He is!

A God Almighty, all powerful, creator of everything and capable of doing anything. That is the spirit and character of Jonathan in this story. What do you want the Lord to do for you?
