The Weekly Word with Dr. Dowe: Joy

“I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished…” Philippians 1:6 (NLT)
In our scripture, we find Paul in prison at Rome, 61 years after the death of Jesus. Paul was writing this letter to Christians at Philippi whom had often brought encouragement to him. The Philippian believers had a very special relationship with Paul because the first church on European soil began at Philippi under the leadership of Paul and his companions during his second missionary trip. Paul wanted to thank the believers for helping him when he had a need. He also wanted to tell them why he could have joy even though he was facing some stuff (i.e. long term imprisonment and an upcoming trial). He counseled them on unity and warned them about problems. The believers never forgot that helping Paul was helping the cause of Christ. The joy they could draw from was not based on past experiences but from the unity that draws from Christ’s love and what Christ does for you.
Painful lessons often open the doors for new opportunities. Everyone wants to be happy; we chase this elusive mind game most of our lives. But what happens when the clothes rot, jewelry loses its luster; the house gets old; the ball game is over; the body loses fat, muscles and hair; and health deteriorates? Right…happiness flees and despair and fear can take over our mind.
Paul’s letter should leave us encouraged to know that the value of knowing Christ gives us grace, joy and peace. Even if we feel like our spiritual life is not growing, rest assured my friend, the work in you, the maturity in your walk began when you first believed. My favorite “lighthouse verses” that keep me grounded reads like this “The Lord said, This is my command-be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Read This Book of Instructions, Meditate on it day and night, so you will be sure to obey it. Then, you will prosper and have success” Joshua 1:8-9. So stay close, be diligent and read The Word daily!
